"Melinda Doolittle says the musical ride she's been on is still the "craziest ever."
Doolittle, 30, finished third on last season's "American Idol." She's gearing up for a CD launch in June (the track "My Funny Valentine" can be downloaded at iTunes), and she'll be in the Sacramento area on Wednesday as part of a Dreyer's ice cream promotion.
As part of that promotion – in which people have been asked to vote on five new "Idol"-inspired ice cream flavors – 10 participating households, including one in Sacramento, will be selected to receive a private concert by Doolittle at their home. The winner will be informed after today's drawing.
We recently spoke with Doolittle from her Nashville home about the sweetness of fame.
Q: What's been so exciting about life since "Idol"?
A: Working on the album is great. … I've met with (musician) Jonny Lang, who is one of my favorites. I want the CD to have a soulful sound with a little grit edge to it.
Q: The Dreyer's tour gives you a chance to make new fans. Is that important with an album due out?
A: I've always been a people person – with a sweet tooth! So it's right up my alley to sing face to face, and the ice cream is a real perk.
Q: Which "Idol" contestants have you kept up with?
A: I recently talked to Gina (Glocksen). And Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey live in the Nashville area. (Sacramento native) Mandisa (of Season 5) and I talk, but we never seem to be able to get together.
Q: Season 7 of "Idol" is a mixed bag of ages. Any advice for the youngsters?
A: If anything, I learned age is just a number. Jordin (Sparks), who was 17, was handling the pressure better than me at 29. It's cool to watch a new crop come in. I'm excited to see what happens, and I'm scared for them at the same time.

. Doolittle is also set to appear from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Raley's in El Dorado Hills (3935 Park Drive)."http://www.sacbee.com/entertainment/story/738752.html
