"I Heard Aretha sing Melinda's song" (Bernie, 8/3/2007)
« on: August 30, 2007, 12:07:11 pm »
I heard Aretha "sing Melinda's song",
"Since You've been gone" in Bb, not in G,
How wonderfully right but yet quite wrong,
Seemed her teacher's masterpiece to me.
"This version is not quite as good," I frowned,
Knowing well in blasphemy I scoffed,
But I know how Melinda took this sound
And catapulted it to spheres aloft.
Aretha, may your art forever shine,
O comely author of the world of Soul,
Melinda's song is here now beside thine,
To carry both to future realms untold.
As Schumann once of Mendelssohn had sung,
Fame and Glory e'er to old and young!

In my opinion, Melinda sings much better than Aretha.  Smiley

Yes, I've heard enough of both to know that Melinda does Aretha's thing better than Aretha does, and there's nothing wrong with that. My poem above explains it.  Aretha's SYBG is a great soul song; Melinda's breathes fire and her stage performance is the cutest, most lovable few minutes under the sun.

There is an old Indian (subcontinent) proverb that a good teacher is always surpassed by his or her pupil.

Melinda is standing on Aretha's shoulders, no doubt about it.  Newton said, "If I see farther than other men, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants." Same here.

Bach (the "old" whom Schumann was talking about when he heard the young Mendelssohn interpret his works) took the North German organ music that Buxtehude was doing, the South German chorales and stuff that Pachelbel was doing, the Italian string music of Corelli and Vivaldi, and made something new and better out of it such that all those dudes are now called "predecessors of Bach."  Melinda does the same with soul/motown, as she mixes it with jazz.

My poem says it all.

Thank you all for your appreciations!

Thank you very, very much!  The aphorism on your .sig image is very, very true, too...

Since you're new here, if you liked that poem, may I recommend its predecessor (which Melinda has thanked me for) http://melindasbackups.com/forum/index.php?topic=108.msg2060#msg2060 ...
