I heard Aretha "sing Melinda's song",
"Since You've been gone" in Bb, not in G,
How wonderfully right but yet quite wrong,
Seemed her teacher's masterpiece to me.
"This version is not quite as good," I frowned,
Knowing well in blasphemy I scoffed,
But I know how Melinda took this sound
And catapulted it to spheres aloft.
Aretha, may your art forever shine,
O comely author of the world of Soul,
Melinda's song is here now beside thine,
To carry both to future realms untold.
As Schumann once of Mendelssohn had sung,
Fame and Glory e'er to old and young!
