Title: Melinda's Backup Book
Post by: jenprays on August 28, 2007, 05:52:39 pm
Hi everyone! This morning as I was getting ready for work I was brainstorming how we could bless Melinda. I was thinking, if I was Melinda I would like to know something about the people who support me. What do you think about Melinda’s Backup Book where we can share basic information, pictures, and stories?

It would be in a scrapbook so I can put the pictures and information together with decorative touches. We could even have pockets for DVD’s if you have the ability to make a DVD to share with Melinda. Each person could have a front and back of a page. So that should give you some space to put a few pictures (you and Melinda, your family, your dog, your daughters drawing of Melinda, the last bee that stung you, etc.), some hand written notes, encouraging words and basic information.

Of course you would only list the information you felt comfortable sharing. I don’t think I need to mention that it would need to be clean, but just in case…if it is inappropriate it will be censored for Melinda’s benefit. I listed some ideas below if you need something to get you started, but it seems most of the people on here are more creative than I could ever dream of being…

Online Name:
Real Name:
Location:
Age:
Eye color:
Height:
Lefty/righty:
Raised in:
Any siblings (younger or older):
Current Family Members:

Favorite Season:
Favorite Food:
Favorite Restaurant:
Favorite Present you received:
Favorite Present you have given:
Favorite Place to Visit:
Favorite Weekend Activity:
Favorite Cartoon/TV Show to watch when you were a child:
Favorite way to spend a rainy day:
Smartest thing you have ever done:
Fun Family Story:
What do/did you want to be when you grow up?
What is the favorite part of your job?
What do you make sure you do every week/day?

Questions for you:
When would be a good time to have everything turned in? I am planning to go to one of the Christmas concerts in the worst case scenario I could always mail it.
Is this something anyone else is interested in doing?

EDIT: Ok, I have thought and prayed about this, I would like each person to have two 12 inch by 12 inch pages. If I can get everyone’s stuff by November 1st, we can get the Backup Book to Melinda by Thanksgiving. If things aren’t coming in as quickly, I will postpone it until December. You will not need to put the pages together, please send me your letters, photos (descriptions would be great too), DVD’s, whatever you come up with but no crazy stuff like locks of hair. Remember you only have two pages to share with Melinda about you…be honest and choose wisely.

Since this is scrapbook style here is some hopefully helpful information:
Handwriting your information on acid-free paper with acid-free markers will not fade with time (plus it is more personal)
Please don’t send me the only picture you have of your favorite grandma, you won’t get it back…make copies of the picture and send me the copy
When your pages are assembled they will have mattes, die cuts and designs added…each page will need to have some “empty space” so it doesn’t look cluttered

As long as everything goes as planned I will take pictures of each page and find some way for you to see what Melinda will receive.

This is a great Idea Jennifer.  I will participate.  I think she would like knowing a little bit about her fans.  Especially since we know so much about her.

Jen, As I posted on the other site, I think this is a great ideal.  I'm thinking of what I'll put on mine as I'm posting.  Are you putting the pages in page protectors?

Great Question ghopper! It will be in page protectors...
my scrapbooking expert suggested using 1 12 x 12 sheet for each side so it could be easily moved around...it will be a 2 page spread (like you would read an atlas)

Please let me know if you have any other questions!!

Perfect!  So when we lay out our pages, each of us will have a 2-page spread (basically 24" X 12").  I'm so excited about this; I don't know where to start!!!

You've got it...I am hoping I will get some inspiration soon, I am stuck on...ok I have two pages...what am I going to do with them...what are the most important parts of my life that Melinda should know about...is there something specific I can put on there to encourage her...yeah I think this is a fun project but I am hopeful for a "aaa ha" moment to bring some clarity.

I definitely want to be a part of this!!

Just to clarify -- we're making the things/writing the information to put on the pages, but not making the pages themselves?

You've got it...just send the stuff to me and I will make it all look pretty...if you would rather send it through the computer that is fine too. Whatever works best for you...

That sounds great!!

I still have 356465757 things to do for my best friend's bridal shower next Saturday (being maid of honor is a lot of work, haha), but I'll start working on my part as soon as that's over.

This is such a wonderful idea!  Thanks for coordinating this for everyone, Jen!! :)

The pages will be 12x12 and you will have two pages but only one side of each...I hope that makes sense.

You will need to send me the info my address:

If you are mailing your stuff you should try to get it to me by November 1 but if you are going to Franklin you may bring it with you...hopefully your packing is better than the postal service (and cheaper)

Just wanna check the ground rules here: this is hardcopy which is not going to be scanned or posted on line?  Whether I'm writing a personal presentation to Melinda or (ultimately) google food will very much determine the content.

Good Question Bernie, I was planning to email a picture of the finished pages to the person so they could see their pages. However if you would rather not have a picture taken that is totally fine. I figured since people might include family/personal information it would not be my place to broadcast their information to the world wide web...
I hope that answers your question...

Indeed. I would be happy to share very personal recollections or old photos/artifacts with any of you personally whom I've come to know and love, for sure including Melinda, but not the with peering eye of the World Wide Web (today's private is tomorrow's public).

I am actually living in the US right now ... but my encounter with Melinda was the same as yours ... she just caught my heart from the audition, and she made me one of the "most obsessed fans" (if you read the posts you will see how many we are ...  :rofl) with My Funny Valentine.

Yes she is really an amazing performer... It touches my heart in a way, like no one else did... and I don't know actually why... maybe it's her personality, I don't really know... but what is sure is that she blow me away everytime she opens her mouth....

American Idol showed on British Television a few days after the performances in the USA.  I got hooked near the beginning.

Soon lots of the people here met up on the American Idol message boards and starting talking about Melinda and realised we all liked the same things about her, and about each other.  We did some joint projects together and  we have all been talking daily to each other on message boards ever since.

Nearly 8 weeks ago we decided to build our own home here - and we have become one big family.

I am so glad you have joined us.

Yes, Marlene , good call Jess!
Marlene it is amazing how many people have been brought together through their love of Melinda. I know you will meet her someday. I never expected to be able to go to Franklin and now I am. I too was hooked from the first audition. I had never seen American Idol before and never would have if I had not been channel surfing and saw Melinda's audition, however, she won my heart with MFV.

So, glad you found us and please feel free to share the website with any other Melinda fans you know.

Love
angel

Friendly reminder: This book is about the backups please share information about you. If you provide me with an email address I will send you a picture of your pages so you can see the final product. This information will not be posted on the internet unless you choose to share the information.

This is not the place to include information which might make Melinda feel pressured or awkward including requests for Melinda to respond to you, or ask her to perform/attend something. If this information is included in your information it will be removed for Melinda’s benefit.

I am so excited about this project. Thank you everyone for being involved!!

Need not to worry folks, you still have time to find some good pictures of you...or cut out people you don't want or whatever. Deadline for the stuff getting to me is Nov 1 or bringing it to Franklin.

Hi,

OK, I have some technical question :duh...
I don't know what's a "12 inch" and a acid free paper or marker... :dunno
Sorry I don't understand the references are different here...  :stupid
And I'm stuck... I don't know where to start and I don't what to put on it so that doesn't sound useless or stupid :help

Marlene

12 inch is approximately 30cm

Just think about choosing paper and ink that will last a long time.  I don't know what acid free is - but I expect it means you should use some good quality paper that you would use for writing a letter, and use either a pen with proper ink in it, or a standard ball point pen.

Do I sense that the content is preferred handwritten, i.e., no printed stuff (with which one could say a lot more, and not even I can read my handwriting) (yes, I understand that handwritten notes are more personal and intimate)....

Bernie, no worries, either handwritten or printed is fine.

Acid free refers to the ability to stand the test of time, archival quality. Really I don't know how much it will matter so I wouldn't worry about it too much...I also don't know if it is readily available.

I am so excited you guys are interested in this project! You guys are AMAZING!!!! :huzzah

Thanks again for doing this :)

Also just checking, content is basically expected to be descriptions / backgrounds of ourselves, i.e., who we, her Backups are, as individuals, as opposed to appreciations or tributes or gratitude to Melinda (although probably a little of that is ok)....

So this is to be something about ourselves ? ! ?  . . . . Who is going to screen what Tiernan writes ? ! ?  . . . The content is suppose to be true and not fiction am I right?   :dunno

Check the first page, there are some questions (survey type) that you can fill out to help get you started...then you will want to include pictures of you, your family... Include what you feel comfortable with...funny camping stories, your favorite memory, let Melinda know who you are...just be yourself...

Oh and don't worry about it Marlene, she will love knowing more about you...no doubt about it!

I understand how you are confused...I planned on providing everything except your pictures and stories (which would be mailed) however some people on this board are scrapbooking pros and asked to put their own pages together (and then mail them to me).

Also in trying to make this project so as many people who want to participate can, I offered to have people who were unable to mail their pictures/notes to me...email them so I can print them out and they can be included.

I hope that clears things up. You do not need to purchase anything. Please send me your pictures, notes, survey and I will take care of any additional "doodads."

btw I keep trying to get blonder...highlights...but my sister won't let me  :prrr

I have one more question ...

Are all the scrapbook pages you use going to be the same color/pattern?  I was going to buy patterned or colored 8 1/2 by 11 paper tomorrow to write the story and survey on.  I was then going to send those pages and the pictures for you to mount in the 12 by 12 paper, but I want the paper I buy to match what you have ... or at least not clash with it.

Wow, are you sick of me and all my annoying questions yet?  :duh

I have another question

I have made two pages - but because of European Paper limitations, each one is A4 (size is just under 12 inches by about 8 1/2 inches).

At work we have a machine which will embed these pages in plastic - laminated I think its called - so I have done that.  This leaves me with a page that is almost exactly 12" high and just over 8 1/2 wide.

Will this work with the type of book you have - in which case I will just bring them to franklin and allow you to fix in place however you like, or is it likely to be too stiff - in which case I have to think again.

Alan, I am sure we can make it work...your pages will likely be stiffer than the other pages but I would hate to not have you in the book. The pages will be inserted into the page protectors of the scrapbook (12x12) so I may add a background paper to fill up the empty space, but I am sure it will look great!! Thanks so much for all the hard work you have put into this Alan!
