Title: Fun, smart and healthy ways to approach fundraising! Our Backups rock!
Post by: chris-play on August 03, 2008, 12:50:40 am
Various Backups have started personal projects to raise funds for our Melinda Doolittle Music Scholarship at Belmont University. It is amazing how creative they are!

- Donna, our Athlete # 2 in residence!, is training for the “November Space Coast Marathon” and she will be raising funds for the Scholarship fund! Way to go Donna, you are awesome.  :huzzah
But this is not all, she is also planning a bake sale at her local grocery store. They allow people to sell stuff outside the store for good causes, and she will most likely do it during Halloween time.  :thumbsup

- Indy, one of our artists in residence!, is auctioning her wonderful dolls at work and she has also involved her husband … what they wouldn’t do for Melinda!  :rofl You can see her beautiful dolls at page three of this thread
http://www.melindasbackups.com/forum/index.php?topic=2247.30

- Rhonda, well, she found a way to raise money without too much effort, the only secondary effect is that her head is by now as big as a water melon …  :yikes :yikes No, don't worry, she is still hanging in there and ready to receive hundreds of slaps! Rhonda, do you realize that we are all having so much fun slapping you and hiding our slaps all around the boards?  :slap :slap

- Sally and Alexis are … crazy!!!  :out They are having a chat marathon that will keep them awake on August the 12th from 7 pm to 7 am!  :yikes They will be in the chat room and need all our support! Pop in if you have time, if you cannot sleep, or simply set the alarm to be there with them even if for a short time! They have sponsors backing them to raise funds for the scholarship, but we can all contribute, too. It will be a long night, they will probably need all the vamps on the site!  :superexcited

Is anyone else doing a personal project? If so, please post it in this thread, so that we can back you up and give you all needed support!

Go Backups Go!  :superexcited :superexcited

This might be an idea for Donna's bake sale.  I've seen places online that will make personalized chocolate bars.  I wonder if you could have some candy made that says something about malarianomore.org or melindasbackups.com, or the marathon. (Oh wait, sorry, this is for the music scholarship. :duh )  Sleep issues strike again! :lolsign  Well, the concept is the same anyway.  I know absolutely nothing about fundraising, so maybe this wouldn't work, but if it's anything you're interested in, Donna, PM me, and I might could help you at least with the cost.  I just thought that everybody likes candy, and that's something they'd be apt to buy, so why not put an additional message there? (or on the wrapper, I think they personalize those too.)

Here are some cakes I made a few years ago for a neighborhood party. It was around Halloween time and the cakes were door prizes.
I thought I would make some similar for my bake sale. I actually may just take orders for cakes and cupcakes so I know how much supplies to get. I already ordered the cake containers from online and got my creepy crawlers to decorate with. So I am ready to start baking. What do you think I should sell the cakes and cupcakes for? All the money will go to the Scholarship Fund.

Donna,
Those cakes are absolutely fabulous!  :huzzah :huzzah :huzzah :huzzah

I don't know what cakes go for in your part of the world, but I know that here, you'd have to pay upwards of $50 per cake at the local supermarket for similar ones to yours.  You go girl! :thumbsup

I have been taking orders for cakes and cupcakes for Halloween. I decided to take orders instead of baking a bunch of stuff and sitting outside a store hoping to sell it all. I didn't want to be left with any baked goods. So it is working well with taking orders and buying supplies as I need them. So far I have 5 orders totaling $60. Three people have said they would donate to my marathon run in November. I do not know that total yet. I have decided to extend my orders for baked goods through Christmas holiday. This is a good way to make a dollar stretch. I figured it would cost about $3 to make a cake. Then I would sell it for $20. And that $20 will go to the Scholarship Fund. I hope I stay busy baking cakes.

Indy had a great idea to raffle off dolls she made. Rhonda's slapping thread is doing very well too. And Sally and Alexis' Chat Marathon was awesome.
:clap :clap :clap  to you all. I want to get more ideas posted.  So if anyone else has ideas, please post them even if you think they might be silly. You never know what will happen. Look at poor Rhonda who has taken a beating for such a long time. What a good sport she is.  :slap   And look how much $ it has brought in.   :huzzah

Another idea is making use of what I have around the house. Several years ago I went and sat with a friend at her booth at an Arts and Crafts festival. She asked me if I had anything I could make to try to sell. Well I came up with a simple wood bunny with fabric ears. I made about 15 of them and to my surprise, I sold every one of them for $5 a piece. If time allows, I will try that again. Here is a pic of the bunny.

And if that doesn't work, I'll head to the nearest Mall with my ole guitar and start singing Peter, Paul and Mary songs. Of course, people would give me money just to shut me up. My singing is just as out of tune as my guitar is.   :har

Donna you are awesome. You know I have  to you all this. When I first thought of the Chat Marathon, I thought I was nuts and then I kept thinking about it and on and on. And it was so much fun that Lexi and I are doing it again next summer.  I plan to try to raise funs for it starting in Jan. You are so creative Donna that I admire you and Indy for the ability to make things.

Yes everyone, if you have any ideas post them, one never knews what would be of interest to people.  Thanks Donna!

Cris, You can always run into a busy intersection with a bucket and collect from cars as I mentioned at the meeting. Just make sure you wear a bright orange vest so people can see you.   :rofl  And when you are running from car to car, that is also great training for the marathon.   :thumbsup

May I make a few suggestions?? . . . you say no.  Well, I'm gonna anyway.  :cheeky

#1  Stand on the street corner with your pants leggs rolled up holding a tin can.   Perhaps the old gents will drop a quarter now and then into the can.    :yikes
#2  Don't you play a flute or something.  Try that on the street corner as well.   :rofl
#3  If you don't bake, cook some Italian food and sell it on the street corner.   :clap
#4  If any of those do not work alone, then do all three at the same time.  Surely you will get attention then.   :thumbsup

Good luck  :rockon

Well tonight was my second night of baking cakes and cupcakes. I was at my parents house this time. I was thinking of seriously getting back to cake decorating like I did years ago. But I might want to think twice. The batch I baked the other night, the chocolate cake and cupcakes sunk in and shrunk after I took them out of the oven. :crying   So I tried chocolate again tonight in my parents oven and it turned out great.  :thumbsup  The only thing I could think I did wrong with the first batch is I mixed two cake mixes together and possibly added too much oil. It might help to put on glasses when I read the instructions.   :duh

Well tonight was going really well. I had some cakes on the counter cooling while another batch baked in the oven. I had 25 minutes so I decided to get some marathon training in and took a run around the neighborhood while the cakes baked.  Well I came back into the house after my run and my parents are standing in the kitchen giving me this look. And I said "What?" My mom looked over at the counter and    :yikes :yikes :yikes
